с обычаями и традициями англоязычных стран

Участники праздника: ведущий, дети (класс или любая другая группа), гости, жюри.

Место проведения: большой зал или школьный двор.

Время проведения: начало мая или окончание учебного года.

The Host/Hostess of the Festival:

Dear children! Dear guests!

Today we are going to have a joyful festival which we call May Day like an old traditional festival in England with the same name.

In the past, May Day celebrated the start of summer. Today it is a national holiday in Britain. May Day is also celebrated in Ireland and in some regions of Canada and America. It is held on or around the 1^{st of May.} It is the time when warmer weather begins and flowers and trees started to blossom. And though, summer officially does not begin until June, May Day marks its beginning. People celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs expressing joy and hope after a long winter. They decorate their houses with flowers, have fairs and parades, both grownups and children dance around a maypole and, of course, choose a May Queen.

We will dance, sing, play and have fun to welcome the summer, too. At the end of our festival the jury will choose the May Queen – the girl who will take the most active part in all the dances, songs and competitions today.

Child 1.

The sun is so bright today Because it is the month of May! The sky is so blue today Because it is the month of May! And we are now so gay Because it is the month of May!

Child 2.

There are twelve months in all the year, As I hear many men say, But the merriest month in all the year Is the merry month of May!

Host: We are opening our festival with the traditional English dance “Now is the Month of Maying.” (children dance to the song in a ring or around a maypole)

Song 2.“The Birds’ Ball” (the song is possible to sing and to dance to) Host: Now let’s listen to a song! (A child sings the song)

The birds all came in their Sunday best, the robin dressed in his bright red vest, The swallow with her young ones gay, Sang and danced and chirped all day. Tra-la-la…

Child 5.

Spring is coming, spring is coming, Birdies, build your nest! Weave together straw and feather Doing each your best.

Child 6.

Spring is coming, spring is coming, Flowers are coming too. Pansies, lilies, daffodilies Now are coming through.

Child 7.

Spring is coming, spring is coming, All around is fair! Shimmer and quiver on the river, Joy is everywhere!

The Host: Now, children, let’s do the “Bird and Flower Quiz” to check if you know them well. I’ll show you pictures of birds and flowers. You will get a point for every right answer. Then you can give all your points to the girl who deserves to become the May Queen in your opinion.

Song3.” The Floral Dance” by Katie Moss

Host: Now let’s dance the jolly Floral Dance!

(Children stand in two rows facing each other: boys on the left, girls on the right. Line 1,2 of the song – boys take a step forward, bow and step back, line 3,4 – girls take a step, bow and step back. At the refrain the first pair of dancers hop along to the end of the row and back to their place. The other dancers stay on their places stepping and clapping. The dance goes on and on.)

The first of May’s the Flora day, Can you dance the Flora? (Child on left addresses child on right, pointing to her)

Yes, I can with a gentleman, I can dance the Flora. (Child on right nods and beckons with finger or makes a curtsey)

Child 8.

When the wind is in the west The corn and clover grow the best.

When the gentle south wind blows The flowers their petals unclose.

Now the noisy winds are still Summer is coming up the hill!

Child 9.

Cuckoo, cuckoo Cries in the wood. Cuckoo is here, Summer is near. Cuckoo, cuckoo Cries in the wood.

Song 4. “Sumer is icumen in”(a medieval English round or rota of the mid-13th century; it is also known variously as the Summer Canon and the Cuckoo Song)

Host:Children, let’s say hello to Summer with a very old English song. Sing along! (All children sing in a choir. The song can be sung as a type of round)

Host: Our festival is coming to an end. We hope you have enjoyed it! Now we are going to choose the May Queen of our festival!
