Alternative sources of energy

People have always wanted to improve their life and become independent from nature. And we've made good progress in that. We heat our houses to keep them warm in any season. We can't imagine our life without TV, computers, and telephones. We know that when it gets dark, we can switch on the electric lights. We light our flats, schools and factories. We light theatres and stadiums. We even light streets and squares in our cities and arrange special illumination for holiday just because it's fun and it makes our life nicer. People use more and more energy every year and don't think that sooner or later the sources of energy can run out.

The main sources of energy on Earth are oil and coal. Actually, we are using the energy, which the Sun gave our planet millions years ago. Prehistoric plants accumulated that energy, and then they died and formed oil and coal. To get the energy we burn them.

However, it's evident that energy supplies like coal and oil are limited, and they will be over quite soon. Scientists of different countries are looking for alternative ways of producing energy. The most popular idea is using solar energy, that is, the energy directly from the Sun. The idea has a lot of supporters, as this is, environmentally, the most friendly way of getting energy - it does no harm to nature. Science fiction writers described automobiles, submarines and even spaceships working on solar energy long ago, but the reality is not so optimistic.

To produce solar energy is not as easy as it seems to be. First and the most, we need special equipment to accumulate it -some kind of solar collectors. Second, the amount of energy from solar rays can't be compared with the amount we really use. We need much more of it. And at last, a big problem is how to store the electricity when we can't use the Sun (for example, in winter, when days are too short). All these problems are still waiting for the solution.

Due to these reasons, and in spite of the fact that solar energy is often called "electricity of the near future", it won't become the main source of energy very soon.

1We need alternative sources of energy because ...

1. we don't want to use coal and oil.

2. we don't know how to use coal and oil.

3. coal and oil supplies will run out soon.

4. our machines can't work on oil fuel.

2We don't use solar energy a lot because ...

1. scientists don't know how to produce much energy and don't know how to store it.

2. scientists think that solar energy source can't be used by people.

3. scientists think that producing solar energy is very bad for the environment.

4. scientists think that it is impossible to produce solar energy.
