I. Setting tasks

Good morning, dear teachers! Good morning, dear students! I’m glad to see all of you today!

Dear students, at the previous lessons we were discussing many things concerning careers: we spoke about the importance of your future profession. Today we will continue this theme by discussing the topic “How to get a job”. So this time you will watch two educational films, read the text about interview preparations. After that you are supposed to make up a dialogue on how to behave during the interview.

II. Revision of grammar and lexical material

Last time we got to know a lot of new things about career and learnt new words and word-combinations. Now I want you to show what you have learnt from the previous lessons and now I’ll give you cards with the vocabulary of the previous lessons and your task is to make up sentences using modal verbs in each of them, ok? The students are given the cards with questions (see Appendix 1).

Let’s see what you have done?

Thank you very much for being active.

III. Checking the material on the topic “How to get a job”

Now let’s turn to the topic of our lesson “How to get a job” First of all I’d like to ask you some questions concerning your previous experience

1. Are you working?

2. Have you ever tried to find a job if you have could you please describe how it happened?

3. How long have you been working?

4. Could you please share your experience with us how to find a job?

That was very good. Thank you very much. So according to your answers nowadays we have a lot of opportunities in finding a job. So today we would go into details and make up a list of tips “How to behave during the interview” Let’s pass over to your home task and read the text “How to get a job” The students are given the text “How to get a job”(see Appendix 2).

After each extract I’ll ask you a question basing on it.

1. What are the 2 main problems faced by the person who is seeking for a job?

2. What is the first thing you do while looking for a job?

- 3. What is the strategy in finding a new job?

Now we’re moving on to the next passage, while reading we’ll make several stops and during a pause you’re supposed to fill the table “do’s and don’ts” at the job interviewm, ok? The students are given the table do’s and don’ts at the job interview(see Appendix 3).

Now you work in pairs and your task is to compare your results with each other. The next thing for us to do is to watch 2 video fragments about the job interview. You will watch these video fragments twice and after that you’ll be given 3 minutes to finish your tables. Also you should decide which tips are positive and which of them are negative. Two educational films: “Good and bad interview” and “What are your strengths and weaknesses”.(seehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OjDRKguXj8&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEV45wAxZ3k )

IV. Learn / revise

Ok, you’ll be given 2 minutes to compare your results with the partner’s ones. The next thing we’re going to do is to sum up your ideas and to create our chart all together. Let’s begin with don’ts could you please share your ideas? Thanks a lot. Now let’s dwell upon “do’s”. Thank you for being productive.

Ok, put off our charts for a little bit we’ll use them later. Now I’m going to give you some stripes and you’re supposed to sequence them in the proper order, to get acquainted with a sample of a job interview. The students are given stripes with the dialogue “How to get a job” (see Appendix 4).

Also pay attention to idioms, special phrases typical of a job interview ok? Let’s checking. Did you find any special idioms or phrases? Could you please enumerate them? That was good thank you.

Now, using your charts and typical phrases you should make up a dialogue of your own. Remember that you have only 15 minutes to do this task.

Your time is over, let’s check, are there any volunteers to start?

Dear students, thanks a lot for such brilliant dialogues. It was a pleasure to listen to you. Your ideas were really very interesting and creative. Thank you very much.

Before we finish our lesson, I’d like you to reflect a little bit. What new things have you learnt?

V. Home assignment

That is the end of our lesson. I’d like to express my gratitude to you thank you for being active and productive today.

Your home task for the next time is to find the samples and the structure of a CV.

See you next time!

HOW TO GET A JOB

Theperson seeking work faces two major problems. The first is actually getting an interview, and the second is making sure they perform well at the interview itself. And I'd like, if I may, to give a few handy tips - some "Do's and Don'ts" as it were.

Firstly, you must make sure that you have a CV and an application letter that is up-to-date. Emphasize the positive aspects of your career history and outline the range of skills you possess which could be useful to an employer. Further details on CV preparation are available in the free leaflet from your local Job Centre. Anyway, once you've got a CV, the next thing is to get it into the hands of possible employers. There are several ways to do this.

First you should check the newspapers on a regular basis for vacancies. Think what kind of jobs you could actually do. It may well be the case that you have the skills necessary to do work which you hadn't previously thought of. So, don't restrict yourself unnecessarily. Also make sure you ask your family and friends about work, as up to fifty per cent of job vacancies never get advertised in the newspapers at all. Another thing you can always do is to make a list of organizations which need your kind of skills and just send them a copy of your CV. An employer may have a vacancy, or they often put your CV in their files and contact you later when a vacancy arises.Whatshould you do to make a good impression at an interview?

Well, many of the things are just common sense really. For instance, make sure you get enough sleep the night before. That way you will look and feel your best on the day itself. Secondly, make sure you wear the right clothes for the job. If it's an office job you must wear formal clothes but for a factory or shop job it is often OK to wear something more casual. But you should always look clean and tidy. And always make sure you arrive, say, ten minutes early. That way you can sit down and relax for a couple of minutes before the interview. Another good tip is to be extra nice to the receptionist, as in many organizations she or he often has a surprisingly large say in who gets the job. And when you meet the interviewer smile pleasantly, shake his or her hand but don't sit down until invited to. I think I hardly need to add that you shouldn't smoke or chew gum. Towards the end of the interview, the interviewer may ask you if you have any questions, so try to think of one or two intelligent ones before the interview. This is easier if you have found out something about the organization - done some research, so to speak. And finally, when the interview is over, never ask if you have got the job. If the interviewer wants to tell you then and there that you have the job, then he or she will.

Appendix 4.

THE TASK: To sequence the strips in the proper order and make up your own

dialogue.

The dialogue “A Job Interview”.

Interviewer: Hello, Mr. Smith Thank you for coming. Please, sit down.

Mr. Smith: Thank you.

Interviewer: Could you tell me a bit about your qualifications?

Mr. Smith: I have a University degree (engineering).

Interviewer: I see. Now, if you were to be offered a position, would you be able to

start straight away?

Mr. Smith: Yes, of course.

Interviewer: Excellent. Now, is there anything you would like to know about us?

Mr. Smith: Yes, I have a few questions. Could you please tell me what the

working hours will be?

Interviewer: Of course. The normal office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an hour for lunch. But we are quite flexible about this.

Mr. Smith: That sounds fine. Could you tell me what salary I might expect?

Interviewer: Well, the starting salary is 11000 rubles a month before tax. After six months salary increases by ten per cent.

Mr. Smith: Oh, that sounds good. When could I expect to hear from you?

Interviewer: We have a few more people to see, but we hope to reach a decision by Friday. We’ll be in touch by the end of the week.

Mr. Smith: Thank you for your time. Good-bye.

Interviewer: Good-bye. And thank you.
