We need to learn some more new words to speak about the media. Then you will learn to differentiate the words that sound similar and to make your own dictionaries.

— Learn to pronounce the new words. Open your books at p. 68 see ex. 22. Repeat the words after me.

Do you believe that the media brings people closer? Give your reasons.

Example: While listening to the radio or watching television people learn a lot about the life style in other countries.

Use: study the languages spoken all over the world, learn about the history of their own country, realize how much in common they have with other peoples, choose the places they would like to visit…

6.  Ex. 27 p. 69( учебникМ.З.Биболетовой 8 класс) Work in groups. Write your own mass media mini-dictionary for the following words and exchange. Use the dictionary if necessary. Put the words in alphabetic order. I give 5 minutes.

Example: A documentary – is a program which gives facts and information about a particular subject.

Read and translate the text “TV or not TV”.

And now answer some questions:

How often do you watch TV?

What are your favourite programmes?

Which is your favourite channel?

The average Russian teenager spends about 20 hours a week in front of the TV-set. What about you?

Do you agree that television has the power to educate?

What do you think of commercials? Do they annoy you?

Do you enjoy watching “soaps”?

Do you think that there’s too much violence on TV?

Do you believe that violence on TV may turn people into criminals?

Some people say that television kills conversation. Do you agree?

VI.Чтение текста о телевизионных пристрастиях американских
подростков. (Чтениенаосновноепониманиепрочитанного.)

Т: And now we are going to read a text about the TV viewing habits of American teenagers and about their favourite leisure activities.

The activity most popular with girls is hanging out with friends. This increases from 20 percent in Grade 3 (8 year olds) to 38 percent in Grade 10 (15 year olds). Social activities -friends and shopping become girls' clear priorities as they grow older. TV viewing, reading for pleasure and sports are declining. Boys want to hang out with friends too, particularly as they grow older. However, computer games are also a highly favoured activity.

As for watching TV, The Simpsons and Friends are the most popular TV programs both with girls and boys.

Top choices among boys are animated programs, comedies and sports. Top choices among girls tend to be programs featuring people in supposedly realistic situations and often focusing on social relationships.

The kids surveyed identified the news as one of their most disliked programs but chil­dren of all ages watch it. A large majority agreed that the news makes them better informed.

The primary qualities of feel-good shows seem to be heroism and overcoming the odds. Girls' choices emphasize adventure. The Harry Potter series and The Lord of the Rings movies appear in both the "feel-good" and "scary" lists.
