THE HISTORY OF KANSK

Every city has got a rich history and people should know and be proud of it.

Kansk is a small town in Krasnoyarsk district and it has a history going back over 390 years. It`s located on the left bank of the Kan river. The population of Kansk is 94,226. Also, it`s necessary to say that there is an air base in the town.

The first Kansky Ostrog was built in 1628. It was transferred to its current location in 1636 and got a status of the town in 1782. The development of the city was greatly helped to the Siberian tract, which was built in the second half of the XVIII century [3].

Now the town is a center of the Kansk-Achinsk lignite basin, which in the early 1980 was developed into one of the largest coal areas of the Soviet Union. There were such industries as cotton, timber and hydrolysis. Unfortunately, nowadays the main branch of the local industry is timber processing, and there is also a large CHP [2].

In spite of the influence of the modern life, Kansk tries to save itsuniqueness and connection with the Soviet times. There are many pre-revolution buildings and they attract and make a good impression on visitors.

There is an active cultural life. For example, every year Kansk receives guests from other cities of our country and even foreigners. It`s connected with International Video Festival. During the Video festival you can see a lot of international films and there is a special screenings, entertainment program and a bank of ideas for the further years of the festivals future[4].

Moreover, there are a lot of sights. Let`s enumerate some of them [1]:

1.Trinity Cathedral. It was built in 1797-1804 in the style of Siberian (Yenisei) Baroque. Later it had several rearrangements in the Soviet period and lost their domes. Fortunately, the Cathedral was restored in the 1990s.

2.Korostelev`s Square. The Cathedral square of Kansk is named after Nikolai Korostelev (Mikhail Kretov). He was a professional revolutionary and was sent into Kansk before the revolution. Nikolai Korostelev established Soviet power there as soon as it became possible. In March 1919 Korostelev was hanged on the Central square of Kansk. Now there is a monument in memory of the hero.

3.Monument to the unknown artist. The original monument is a sample of infrequent contemporary art in Kansk , which was appeared in the city in 2009 after one of the video festivals.

4.Zazubrin`s house. Vladimir Zazubrin, who lived in Kansk from 1919 to 1928. He was one of the first Soviet writers. His famous novel "Two worlds" was written in 1920. It told about the defeat of Kolchak's army.

5.Filimonov`s mill. The mill was built in 1911 on the initiative of one of the city merchants. It is a large building, and some production activity is still warm in it.

7.Tsar's gate. The arch gate was set up in 1891 to the arrival of the future Emperor Nicholas II, who returned to St. Petersburg from Japan. The gate was demolished after the revolution. But the sight was recreated in a new place in the center of Predmostnaya square in 2006.

8.Spasskaya Church. The cemetery Church was built in 1964 after the closure of the Trinity Cathedral.

In addition, it`s important to say that there is no future without the past. That`s why every person should know the history of the place where he lives or lived.
