Ход проведения:

Teacher: There are lots of great poets, writers in every country. Today we will honor the memory of two famous persons of Great Britain. We’ll learn some dates and facts of their lives and listen to their poems.

Pupil 1: (рассказзвучитподлютневуюмузыку 16 века) We’ll begin with William Shakespeare, the great English poet and dramatist. W. Sh. was born in 1564 in a small town of Stratford-upon-Avon. Young Sh. Studied at the grammar school. When the boy had free time, he liked to go to the forest and to the river Avon.

P.2: At that time there were no theatres in England. Groups of actors traveled from town to town and played in different places. Young William went to see all their shows and liked them very much. He wanted to become an actor.

P.1: In 1585 when Sh. Was 21, he went to London. There he joined a group of actors. The famous Globe Theatre was the centre of London’s theatrical life. Sh. played on its stage and wrote plays himself.

P.3: I’d like to tell you about the Globe theatre. “The Globe” was opened to the public in 1599. In the middle there was a kind of house. There the actors dressed and kept the things. In front of it there was a platform. This platform was the stage on which the actors played. In front of the stage was a large yard. Round the yard there were three balconies, which were for people who came to see the performance. The people of London loved their theatre very much. Everybody went to the theatre – young and old, rich and poor. People had no newspapers, no radio, no TV in those days. That’s why the theatre played a great part in their lives.

P.4: At the same time Sh. was an actor, a poet and a writer of drama. He wrote 154 sonnets, 2 poems and 37 plays.

Sonnet 130

My mistress’eyes are nothing like the sun:

Coral is far more red than her lips’ red:

If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun:

If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.

I have seen roses damask, red and white.

But no such roses see I in her cheeks:

And in some perfumes is there more delight

Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.

I love to hear her speak, yet well I know

That music hath a far more pleasing sound”

I grant I never saw a goddess go:

My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.

And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare

As any she belied with false compare.

P.5: Since 1590 till 1600 Sh. created comedies and histories. In this period Sh. wrote such histories as “King Henry 4”, “King Henry 5”, “King Richard 2” and others. “Romeo and Juliet” is one of Sh’s best plays. This play is full of love, youth and humanism. It was often staged at the Theatre and it was a great success. In the period between 1600 and 1608 Sh. created his famous tragedies. In his works he presents great human problems. He began with the tragedy “Hamlet”, which was a great success. Then appeared “King Lear”, “Othello”, “Macbeth” and others. In 1612 Sh. left London. He decoded to live in Stratford. Sh. died in 1616. His plays are popular now аnd million of people admire them.

(Звучит песня на стихи Р.Бернса)

P.6: R. Burns is a famous poet of Great Britain and the national poet of Scotland. Burns was born in 1759 in Alloway, Scotland. His father was a poor farmer, but he wanted to give their children the best education. There were 7 children in the family. Robert was the eldest. His mother had a very good voice and she often sang songs. In 1765 Robert was sent to school. He liked reading. His favorite writer was W. Shakespeare. Robert’s childhood was not happy. Being eldest in the family Robert had to begin working on the farm at a very early age.

P.7: In 1773 Robert was 14 when he wrote his first poem. It was “Handsome Nell” and was written for a girl who worked in the field with him. All great poets began to write poems when they fell in love. The same thing happened to Robert. He wrote beautiful poems and song of love.

“O Red, Red Rose”

O my love’s like a red, red rose

That’s newly sprung in June,

O my love’s like the melodie

That’s sweetly play’d in tune.

As fair are you, my bonie lass,

So deep in love am I;

And I will love you still, my Dear

Till a’the seas go dry.

Till a’the seas go dry, my Dear,

And the rocks melt with the sun;

I will love you still, my Dear,

While the sands o’life shall run.

P.8: In February 1784 Robert’s father died and Robert became the head of the family. But in spite of all difficulties hr began to write a book of poems. At one of the dancing parties Robert met the “beauty of the village” – Jean Armour. It was “love at first sight”. Jean had a beautiful voice and Robert composed songs for her. But Jean’s father didn’t want his daughter to marry Robert because he was poor. The words of the following poem reflect his thoughts and feelings.

“Eliza”

From you, Eliza. I must go

And from my native shore,

The cruel fates between us throw

A boundless ocean’s roar;

But boundless oceans, roaring wide,

Between my love and me.

They never, never can divide

My heart and soul from thee.

P.9: In August 1786 Burns published his poems. Their success was great. In April 1787 the second edition of Burns’s poems appeared in Edinburgh. It brought him money and gave him a chance to make several trips around the country and to see beautiful landscapes in the Highlands. The result of this tour was his poem.

“My heart’s in the Highlands”

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart’s in the Highlands, a chasing a deer;

Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;

My heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North;

The birth place of Valour, the country of Worth;

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove;

The hills of the Highlands forever I love.

P.10: Robert Burns died in 1796. After his death his poems were translated into almost every language. The translations into Russian were made by our poet S. Marshak. In1948 Marshak got the state Prize for his translations of Sh’s sonnets.

(в заключении звучит романс «Моей душе покоя нет» муз. Петрова, слова Р.Бернса в переводе С.Маршака)
