London was founded by the Romans in 43 A. D. and was called Londinium. In 61 A. D. the town was burned down and when it was rebuilt by the Romans it was surrounded by a wall. The Romans went to England many, many years ago. They built a town on the River Thames. The name of the town was Londinium. Soon Romans built a bridge over the River Thames. Londinium got bigger and bigger. The Romans built a lot of roads from Londinium to other parts of Britain. By the year 400, there were 500000 people in Londinium. Soon after 400, the Romans left Britain. The London of the middle of the 17th century was a city of narrow, dirty streets. There was little light and air. It is no wonder that epidemics were common.

It was said time for London. The streets were empty , shops were closed and there were few boats on the Thames. In those days people usually built houses of wood, and they often were near one another. The 1666th was the year of the great Fire of London. The fire burnt for four days and destroyed 80% of the city. More than 250 thousand people didn’t have home any more.

After the Great Fire people built a new city. New city was light and very clean. People have built it of stone. The , and there were built many historical monuments. Now London is financial business and cultural centre of the country.

As we know London was different those times. Now it is safe to say that London is the centre of the world. “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life: for there is in London all that life can afford” -, wrote Samuel Johnson in 1777.

From the history of London we knew that main sights of London were built after the Great Fire, that had changed the face of London forever.

Now we are going to watch the video , where you must write out the sights you see there . Your h/w was to find out the information about the sights. Let’s watch the video and then you will tell me the information you have found.

-What sights did you see?

-What do you know about this sight?

Trafalgar Square is one of the tourists’ centres of the city. Trafalgar Square with the Nelson’s monument 185 feet high in the middle of the square, erected in the 1840s to celebrate the victory of Admiral Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.Four bronze lions look at the square stands a tall column. There are two beautiful fountains in the square. Trafalgar Square is a place for rallies, marches and political meetings.

Это любимое место у студентов.

Westminster Abbey is fine Gothic building, which stands opposite the House of Parliament. It is the work of many hands and stages. It contains the memorials of many famous citizens of Britain. The oldest part of the building dates from the 8th century. There are many of the greatest writers are buried in the Poet’s Corner: Geoffrey Chaucer , Samuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Alfred Tennyson, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling. It is a royal church.

The House of Parliament is the first palace was built for Edward the Confessor, who came to the throne in 1042. The Palace of Westminster has two miles of corridors and more than 1,000 rooms. When Parliament is sitting , a flag flies from the Victoria Tower (the taller tower of the complex) and a light shines by night. Visitors can watch the House of Commons and the House of Lords at work from the Strangers’ Gallery.

Был очень забавный случай когда ко роль пришёл в Дом Правительства чтобы взять под стражу одного из Лордов , но глава правительства не позволил ему это сделать, из-за чего король очень обиделся но ничего сделать не смог. Почему?

The Tower of London is one of the most interesting places in London.

It was founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror. But each monarch left some kind of personal mark on it. For many centuries the tower was a fortress, a palace, a royal residence, a prison, a royal treasury. And now it is a museum of arms and armour, and as one of the strongest fortress in Britain, it has the Crown Jewels. The ravens whose forefathers used to find food in the Tower still live here as part of its history. There is a legend that if the ravens disappear the Tower will fall. Thatiswhythebirdscarefullyguarded.

Five minutes before the hour the Head warder comes out with a bunch of keys and an old lantern. He goes to the guardhouse and cries : “Escort for the keys”. Then he closes the three gates and goes to the sentry, who calls : “Halt, who comes there?”. The Headwarder replies : “The Keys’”. “Whose Keys?” demands the sentry. “Queen Elizabeth’s Keys”, comes the answer. “Advanced Queen Elizabeth’s Keys. All’s well ” .

Now we can tell few words about Buckingham Palace. It has served as the official London residence of Britain's sovereigns since 1837. Their home is open to around 30.000 guests in summer, attending garden parties.

One of the greatest English churches , St.Paul’s Cathedral. The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century, with it's famous Whispering Gallery. It took Sir Christopher Wren 35 years. Work on Wren’s masterpiece began in 1675 after a Norman church , old St.Paul’s , was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.

Tower Bridge is one of the finest bridges in London. London is famous for its green parks. Until 1749, there was only one bridge over the river: London Bridge. The London Bridge looked very strange. There were houses and shops on the bridge. In the 19th century there were already many new bridges in London. Now there are more than twenty bridges over the Thames.

We reviewed some famous sights of London, but London has wonderful sights which are visited by about 3 mln tourists every year.

-How do you think which sights are they?

Some students have prepared reports about these wonderful sights for you. And the first report will be about the wax museum of Madam Tussaud.

You will listen to the report and translate it.

Do you know that it costs about 40,000 dollars to make a wax figure at Madam Tussaud’s;

Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Marilyn Monro, Marlon Brando, Elisabeth Tailor, Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, the British Royall Family, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton, Jack the Ripper…There are no other place where you can see all celebrities at once, even if they are only wax figures.

The museum is situated in Marylebone Road. Every year the museum had 3 mln visitors. The wax figures are standing and sitting, and sometimes even moving and talking. They are extremely realistic and when they look at you, their eyes sparkling, you often feel uncomfortable in their company. Computer- controlled figures are especially popular with the visitors.

Now please translate me the report.

-Whose wax copies did you see?

-How do you think why do so many people visit this museum every year?

Now you know about this unusual museum . But we have a report about another interesting museum .

To find out the name of the museum I’ll give you a hint.

This is the place where the world’s most famous detective lived. ]

You will listen to the report about Sherlock Holmes museum and fill in the missing words.

In 1990 , a museum was opened at 221b Baker Street . There is no modernvirtual reality. There are no horrors , no mummies or hidden corpses, no wax figures…Everything in the museum reminds us of the stories we know so well. The Sherlock Holmes Museum is unlike other museums. Very little here is locked up in a glass cases. You can sit in Holme’s armchair by the fireplace, you can examine his things.

People from all over the world have been writing to this address for last 100 years. People send greeting cards at Christmas and Holmes’s birthday.

You know that Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes detective stories, did not like his character and only great love of readers to the detective made the author write new and new adventures of the detective.

-Why do people write letters and send postcards to this address for last 100 years?

-What is the difference between this museum and other museums?

Now you know about two the most famous museums in the world.

Many cities are known by the sights which are situated there. For example Paris has the Eiffel Tower, Astana has Bai Terek . London has the symbol too. Now tell me what is the symbol of London?

-What do you know about Big Ben?

You will listen to the report, translate it and write out the numbers from the report.

Big Ben is the name of the huge clock in one of the tall towers of the Houses of Parliament. Big Ben weights 13.5 tones. The clock tower is 318 feet high. You have to go up 374 steps to reach the top. Its face is 23 feet wide. The minute –hand is 14 feet long. The hour hand is 9 feet long.

-What numbers did you write?

-Why does this bell is called Big Ben?

-Which one of three sights is the most interesting for you? Why?

-If you had a chance what sight would you like to visit?

-We know that Big Ben is the symbol of London. What symbols of London do you know?

-What means of kind of transport is popular in London?

-What colour is the taxi in London?

-Why do Londoners call underground of London “the tube”?

-Итак ,какие достопримечательности мы повторили?
