FOOD CAN HEAL AND IT CAN KILL”

Sub theme: The role of vitamins and minerals.

Objectives of the lesson:

1. Educational aim is being focused on developing and reinforcing students' listening skills. Speaking is also being developed throughout the discussion activities.

2. Upbringing aim has its focus on forming a firm idea of a healthy diet, and ability to persuade others to eat healthy food.

3. Development aim is focused on their ability to understand and express their own feelings and emotions, as well as feelings and emotions of other people in the group, which helps them to communicate with ease in their every day life in and out of school environment.

Audience: a group of 15-16year old students.

Approximate time: 45 minutes.

ACTIVITY 1

Introduction of the theme and main activities.

Answer the questions:

Food is at the center of many of our important activities. Can you answer the question what role food plays in your life?

What kind of food is eaten a lot in your family?

What do you think if there is any connection between your diet and health?

What do you do to stay healthy?

Now it is very popular to keep up a diet. Have you ever done it?

What diets do you know? What are their minuses?

Do you know 6 main nutrients? The first letter of each word in the following sentence can help you remember all six nutrients.

FrankChewsPeachesWithMuchVigor.

Useful information: F stands for fat, C stands for carbohydrate, P stands for protein, W stands for water, M stands for minerals, V stands for vitamins.

ACTIVITY 2.

Pre Listening.

Do people from different countries like to eat the same food? Why?

What do you think if the words “junk” food and “fast” food are synonyms or not?

Do you like junk food?

Have your parents ever told you that fast food and junk food is very harmful for your health?

Do you understand why it is harmful?

Useful tips: If you want, your students to speak more ask more “WHY” questions.

ACTIVITY 3

Listen to the extracts of the articles and match them with the headlines.

Are you afraid of heart disease?

Food for different cultures.

A “Happy” diet.

Tell me where you live, and I will tell you what you eat.

The role of enzymes.

a) Often the differences among cultures in the food they eat are related to the differences in geography and local resources. People who live near water tend to eat more fish. People who live in colder climates tend to eat heavier, fatty food. However, with the development of a global economy, food boundaries and differences are beginning to disappear.

b) British research has shown that poor quality foods and low levels of vitamins can cause aggressive, anti-social behaviour. Often the link between diet and behaviour is easily explained. The iron vitamin, for example, is needed to produce the enzymes which keep down the body’s adrenaline levels. Without those enzymes, excess adrenaline makes a person excitable and undisciplined. If someone goes without the proper vitamins all the time, their whole character may change.

c) The manner in which food is selected, prepared, presented, and eaten often differs by culture. One man’s pet is another person’s delicacy – dog, anyone? Americans love beef, yet it is forbidden to Hindus, while the forbidden food in the Moslem cultures is normally pork, eaten extensively by the Chinese and others.

d) Fatty food makes you fat because there are twice the number of calories in fatty foods as there are in starchy foods. And if you eat a lot of junk food, you are taking in too many heavy fats – that’s the animal fat which increases your cholesterol level and can lead to heart disease. This is especially dangerous for men and women after 45.

e) The food you eat influences your brain chemistry, so it’s important to eat plenty of foods that allow your brain make the chemicals serotonin and noradrenalin, which help fight depression. Nutrition consult Ian Marber says a change in diet works for 80 to 90 per cent of his clients who suffer from depression.

Useful tips: These texts can be either listened or read.

ACTIVITY 4

Post listening:

What deficiency of vitamins can lead to?

Do you agree that changing the diet we can become healthier?

Do you agree with me that if a man is healthy on the inside, it shows on the outside?

What does it mean “it shows on the outside”? Can you give some examples of the telltale signs?

Useful information: These are some examples of the telltale signs.

* White marks on the fingernails (not enough ZINK) include more mushrooms and brown rice in your diet.

* Problems with eyes (not enough vitamin A) include more carrots, eggs, and milk.

* Your skin is too dry (not enough VITAMIN E and C) eat citrus and grains.

* You have hair loss (not enough iron) include more nuts and meat in your diet.

What do you think if there is a link between the food you eat and your character?

How can you characterize a person who likes to eat sweet food (chilly food)? What can you tell about a person who is rather Picky in food? What character do people who are more interested in quantity than quality of food have?

ACTIVITY 5

Revision of the unreal conditional sentences.

If you were a vegetable or fruit what would you like to be. Why?

Useful tips: It will be better if you give the first example speaking about yourself.

ACTIVITY 6.

Matching of the “food” idioms with their Russian equivalents.

top banana

in a pickle

dangling the carrot

to go beetroot

carrot and stick

a bad/rotten apple

spill the beans

поманить конфеткой

кнутом и пряником

покраснеть(от стыда)

затруднительное положение

паршивая овца

проговориться

начальник

Mime these “food” idioms.

Students choose an idiom from the board and mime it so that other students can identify the idiom they are miming.

ACTIVITY 7

Home assignment:

To create a brochure of Russian national food. It can be individual or group work. It can be a multimedia project or a printed brochure.

Useful tips: The students can do other writing activities to strengthen their vocabulary and their writing skills, but giving them the opportunity to create a food brochure provides them with an opportunity to be creative.

ACTIVITY 8

Assessment.

The main idea of this lesson is developing of the speaking skills, that’s why assess your students not according to how well the skills were used, but to how much effort was displayed by your students in learning the language.

While students are working circulate and note mistakes heard and then next lesson write the sentences, with their mistakes, on the board to be corrected as a class discussion.
