Раздел 2 (Чтение)

I. Установите соответствие между заголовкамиA-F и текстами 1-7. Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую букву только один раз. Взаданииодинзаголовоклишний.

A.Tomorrow's vegetables. E. Unhealthy eating habits.

B.Environment in danger.F. East meets West.
СBritish traditional food.

D. Fast food.

Fast food and packaging come together. When you have eaten the beefburger, you throw away
the packaging and somebody will then burn or bury it. This is clearly a problem. Fast food also
contributes to global warming. In Brazil, 12 million acres of forest were cut down to build farms.
Farmers use this land to grow soya beans and soya is given to the cows that become the beef in your
beefburger. Fewer forests mean more global warming.

Traditional methods of cooking and eating are disappearing, and are being replaced by fast food
and ready-prepared meals. As a result, people today (especially children) have too much sugar, too
many sweet drinks, too much white bread. This makes people's level of blood glucose go up, causing
tiredness, nervousness and headaches. Among schoolchildren it can also cause low concentration and
bad behaviour.

Not many children like vegetables. It has been proved that eating vegetables in childhood helps
to protect you against serious illness in later life. So yesterday chocolate-flavoured carrots went on sale
in Britain as part of a campaign to encourage children to eat vegetables. The range of products also
includes cheese-and-onion flavoured cauliflower, pizza-flavouredsweetcorn, and peas that taste like
chewing-gum.

People in Britain are more likely to eat fast food than to go out to eat in a restaurant. A
hamburger and French fries are the most popular fast-food meal in Britain, but not all fast food is
American. Kebab houses, run by Greek and Turkish, are also popular. An increasing number of people
eat convenience food in the evenings. Convenience meals are already cooked - all you have to do is
heat them up in the microwave.

Most British people, if they go out for a meal, go to their local Indian or Chinese restaurant.
There are 8,000 Indian restaurants in Great Britain. They serve food from India, Pakistan and
Bangladesh. Indian food is often vegetarian since most Indians eat little or no meat. Most Chinese
restaurants serve food, including steamed or deep-fried dumplings, with either savoury or sweet
fillings.

There are two addresses in London that the whole world knows. One is 10 Downing Street, where the Prime Minister lives. The other is Buckingham Palace. This famous palace, first built in 1703, is in the very centre of London.

It is two places, not one. It is a family house, where children play and grow up. It is also the place

where presidents, kings, and politician go to meet the Queen.

Buckingham Palace is like a small town, with a police station, two post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sports clubs, a disco, a cinema and a swimming pool. There are 600 rooms and three miles of red carpet. Two men work full-time to look after the 300 clocks. About 700 people work in the Palace.

When the Queen gets up in the morning, seven people look after her. One starts her bath, one prepares her clothes, and one feed the Royal dogs. She has eight or nine dogs, and they sleep in their own bedroom near the Queen's bedroom. Two people bring her breakfast. She has coffee from Harrods, toast, and eggs. Every day for fifteen minutes, a piper plays Scottish music outside her room and the Queen reads The Times.

Every Tuesday evening, she meets the Prime Minister. They talk about world news and have a drink, perhaps a gin and tonic or a whisky.

When the Queen invites a lot of people for dinner, it takes three days to prepare the table and three days to do the washing-up. Everybody has five glasses: one for red wine, one for white wine, one for water, one for port, and one for liqueur. During the first am second courses, the Queen speaks to the person on her left and then she speaks to the person on her right for the rest of the meal. When the Queen finishes her food, everybody finishes, and it is time for the next course!

-Would you like a cup of tea, Jill? There are still a few chocolate biscuits left , you know, the ones you like.

-Mark? What do you need?

-What do you mean? I was just making myself a cup of tea and I wondered if my big sister wanted one too. Why are you always so suspicious?

-Because I know you. When you offer to do something for me, you always want me to do you a favour.

-Well, there is just one little thing.

-Get to the point. What do you want? I haven’t got much time. I’ve got loads of homework to do this weekend .

-But it’s only Friday. You’ve got plenty of time.

-Tell me what you want before I lose my temper.

-OK, it’s just that I wondered if you could help me with my Maths homework, please.

- Again? Why don’t you listen when the teacher explains?

-I do, but I can’t make my head or tail of it. The trouble is everybody in my class seems to be better at Maths than me. Mr Thompson often asks if everybody has understood and I’m too embarrassed to admit I’m confused.

- It’s very strange. You are very good at Sciences in general but useless at Maths. If you want to be an engineer you’ll have to improve your Maths. Bring your book here and let’s see if I can help you. But remember ,I’m not going to do it for you. I’ll explain it to you again and then you can sit here and do it. Okay? Then I can carry on with my homework too. If possible I’d like to finish everything this evening. I’ve got plans for the weekend and they don’t include spending hours on Sunday evening doing homework. Ah, before you sit down, did you say something about tea and biscuits?
