Разработка урока английского языка на тему «How to Make a Business Introduction»

Разработка урока английского языка для делового общения по теме «How to Make a Business Introduction». Готовый план занятия включает изучение ключевых фраз, этикета и структуры представления в профессиональной среде. Материал соответствует международным стандартам преподавания английского как иностранного (TEFL) и подходит для использования в дистанционном образовании. Урок содержит практические диалоги, ролевые игры и упражнения для отработки навыков, позволяя обучающимся уверенно проводить деловые знакомства на английском.

Содержимое разработки

Plan of a 5-step listening comprehension lesson (60 minutes)

The heading 

Class profile:4 male-students (profession – analysts and marketing managers) high B2, first language is Russian, location of classroom – the Russian Federation, office of the company.

Lesson topic and the skill or system used: A speaking lesson on the topic “How to Make a Business Introduction”

Materials needed:

whiteboard and markers;

computer for listening activity;

Student-centered objective:By the end of the lesson students will practise dialogs between each other, gain more confidence using good English during business meetings, which they have every day, and make a good first impression on their business partners, which is the key point for successful collaboration.

Assumptions:I assume that students have enough knowledge to get a clear idea of new vocabulary, useful phrases and necessary introduction skills, because their level of language is appropriate to it. I assume that students will be interested in this lesson, because they have negotiations with new partners or colleagues from English-speaking countries almost every week and the result of negotiations with partners or effective team-work with colleagues strongly depend on the first impression and good introduction skills.

Potential problems and solutions:all the students have fluent English and very good communicative skills, so it’s very important to provide them a very energetic, full of activities lesson. Also it’s important to give them only useful vocabulary and phrases, because their level of knowledge is rather high, so I must be sure, that they will not be bored and be interested in this lesson. For this reason I asked them on previous lesson, what gaps they have in business vocabulary and what they need to know for more effective work.

The procedures section 

The rationale 

Step I –

7 minutes

Objective – To create interest in topic and to personalize lesson content

Before listening to audio I will introduce a new topic to the students and create interest in it. I will focus this part of lesson on speaking, because it’s very important to my students – usually we have lessons early morning, before working day, that’s why they need to do something active not to get asleep (according to my experience, written exercises are not so effective for this goal).

For this reason I will write some phrases on the whiteboard with markers of different colors such as:

1) what is the most important for the first meeting with a new business,

2) what things should you have with you at the first meeting (is it obligatory to have business card, titles etc.?),

3) what are the most important rules for self-introduction and the introduction of your colleague.

Then I ask each of the students to choose any of these topics and say a few words on it. As a help for students I may ask them questions on this topic, for example, such questions I may ask on topic 3:

In Russia we have 2 times of companies – with formal rules of communication and informal ones. What are the difference between them?

How it is related to the rules of business introduction?

What of such companies would be more comfortable for you? Why?

The other students may support the response of this student or add some extra information.

Step II – 7 minutes

Objective – To pre-teach essential vocabulary, so students can complete reading tasks successfully

The level of the students is good enough to listen to the audio, but they need enough vocabulary for understanding this video material, so, I would write some the most difficult words on the board such as: nerve-wracking, office-hiring situation, under the circumstances (these phrases are very difficult to pronounce for Russian learners, so we will pronounce them together), new hire, shaking hands, demeaner etc. Then we will discuss these terms. For example, if one of the students doesn’t know the meaning of the word, I would ask the other students to give a definition – it’s good speaking practice and helps to remember some words better.

Step III - 19 minutes

Stage (Activity) Objective – Students will listen to audio (listening for the main idea)

We listen to the audio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrmB6vFrOjY and discuss the main idea of this video using such questions as:

What do you think about this video?

Do you agree with such rules of business introduction?

What should be added to such list of rules?

After discussion I give to my students extra reading materialhttp://smallbusiness.chron.com/make-good-verbal-business-introduction-24556.html. I divide students into groups of two and explain to them the rules of the game, the necessary parts of each role, the requirements for good speaking (using new vocabulary, polite and detailed answers etc.), how much time do they have and what the expected result is (they must know their first and last names, position and whom they will be introduced). One of the students will introduce the other student, and then they will change the roles. I control each pair of students and correct their mistakes going around the class from one pair to the second. After 7 minutes the activity is stopped.

Step I – 10 minutes

Stage (Activity) Objective – Students will listen to audio (listening for detail), demonstrate their comprehension of new vocabulary.

Then we listen to the audio again, discuss what new the students learnt. The students demonstrate their knowledge of new vocabulary and tell, what new words or useful phrases they learnt from the video material. I ask the students to demonstrate their comprehension, for example, I tell – please, shake the hands and they should do it. It would be practical experience – through it is better to learn new expressions.

Step IV–

17 minutes

Stage (Activity) Objective – personalize the information through speaking practice. Students will use the information gained in dwelling on a topic and practicing it in dialogues with each other; also they combine new information with previous knowledge.

In this part of the lesson I should help the students to summarize all new knowledge, for that reason I will ask students to write down the short story (not more than 8 sentences) about the first meeting new boss with his employees (they use reading material and new expressions from the video). It’s a good experience because one day most of my students will have promotion, so they anyway will be in such circumstances. After 8 minutes each of the students read his short story. Some of his\her peers may be asked by me to express the opinion about this story. Also we may discuss the possible difficulties, which students faced during role-play and the ways, to overcome these difficulties in real situations.
