Сочинение на английском языке
I live in Volgograd.
I live in a very beautiful and heroic city, standing on the Volga. Wide tree-lined boulevards cross its spacious squares, tall poplars and fragrant limes stir in the breeze; the sun flashes from the windows of the high modern houses, shimmers in the puddles left by the heavy rain and catches the post-holes of passing ships and boats.
Volgograd … It is a hive of noise and activity, full of children’s laughter.
Volgograd… This is my native city, I was born here. I love Volgograd. I think that the love for one’s native land begins from the house he lives. The most beloved place for me is KIM street. It is deciphered as the Communist Youth International. Just think of its name! That organization united the progressive young people of different countries. Reading the name of my street you see the internationalism of our city and its residents. They respect other peoples’ culture, they devote to them the names of their streets: Kazakhskaya, Abkhazskaya, Kitayskaya, Koreyskaya, Mongolskaya, Tbilisskaya, Port-Saida Street, Hirosima Street, etc.
What attracts me in my street? It is rather small, very green and quiet street. I like its silent yards, numerous houses, kiosks, shops and, of course, my native school.
My street is beautiful both in the morning and in the evening. I like walking along my street in any season and in any weather. Not far from my house there is the JSC “People Enterprise “CONFIL”, I like the sweet smell of caramel, it puts me in good spirits and gives a lot of energy.
I love my street and my house because it is the only place where I am always waited for by my mum and dad, I am sure they’ll always understand me.I’ll never exchange my city for any other one.
Volgograd is very dear to me. I am proud of my city. I want everybody to know its history and its present.
Volgograd originated with the foundation in 1589 of the fortress of Tsaritsyn at the confluence of the Tsaritsa and Volga Rivers. The fortress, which took its name from the local name Sary Su (Yellow Water/River in the Tatar language), was established to defend the unstable southern border of Tsarist Russia and became the nucleus of a trading settlement. It was captured twice by Cossack rebels, under Stenka Razin in the rebellion of 1670 and Yemelyan Pugachev in 1774. Tsaritsyn became an important river port and commercial centre in the 19th century.
The city was the scene of heavy fighting during the Russian Civil War.Bolshevik forces occupied it during 1918, but were attacked by White forces under Anton Denikin. During the battle for Tsaritsyn the Bolsheviks were pushed back and surrounded at first, and only the actions of Joseph Stalin, then local chairman of the military committee, saved the city for the Bolsheviks. Stalin did so by recalling Zhloba's 'Steel Division' from the Caucasus which attacked the White Forces in the rear. In honor of Stalin's efforts in defending the city, it was renamed Stalingrad in 1925.
Under Stalin, the city became heavily industrialized and was developed as a centre of heavy industry and trans-shipment by rail and river. During World War II, the city of Stalingrad became the center of the Battle of Stalingrad as well as the pivotal turning point in the war against Germany. The battle lasted from August 21,1942 to February 2,1943. The city was reduced to rubble during the fierce fighting, but reconstruction began soon after the Germans were expelled from the city.
The Motherland Calls on the Mamayev Kurgan- the largest statue in the world when erected in 1967.

For the heroism shown during the battle, Stalingrad was awarded the title Hero City in 1945, and King George VI of the United Kingdom awarded the citizens of Stalingrad a jeweled sword in appreciation of the bravery that they had shown.
The Panorama museum, which is located alongside the Volga river, contains artifacts from World War II. These include a panoramic painting of the battlefield from the location of the monument "Mamayev Kurgan." Here a rifle of the famous sniper Vasily Zaytsev, can also be found.
In 1961, the city's name was changed to Volgograd ("Volga City").
It’s hard to imagine the past when one sees present day Volgograd with its Heroes’ Avenue, the majestic embankment, the crowded Lenin Avenue with its stores, cafes, hotels, movie theatres and a multitude of lights.
The most important sights of the city are
The Motherland Calls on the Mamayev Kurgan- the largest statue in the world when erected in 1967;
