Wi-Fi networks and their settings
Wireless networks are becoming more popular every day, and this fact is undeniable. At the same time, the growth in the popularity of wireless equipment for end users is quite comparable with the growth in the standard of living. As soon as two or even more PCs appear in the house, the problem arises of integrating them into a local network, and the best option for home is the wireless network. Another typical example where the best choice is the wireless network is the organization of wireless shared Internet access in a home environment using a wireless router. What is the reason for the growing popularity of wireless networks? First of all, in comparison with traditional cable networks, they have a number of serious advantages, the main of which, of course, is the ease of deployment. So, the wireless network does not need cable routing (which often requires wall-shroking); It is also difficult to challenge the merits of a wireless network, such as the mobility of users in the area of its operation and the ease of connecting new users to it. At the same time, wireless networks are not devoid of certain disadvantages. First of all, this is a low speed of connection by today's standards, which seriously depends on the presence of obstacles and on the distance between the receiver and the transmitter; poor scalability, and also, when it comes to using a wireless network in the premises, a fairly limited range of network operation. However, it should be noted that in each specific case, there are ways to overcome all the problems associated with wireless networks. For example, the range of a wireless network can be increased by adding multiple access points and building a distributed wireless network. Similarly, the problem of network scalability is solved, and the use of external directional antennas allows to effectively solve the problem of obstacles that limit the signal. In this article we will describe in detail how to step-by-step deploy and configure a wireless network at home. Modes of functioning of wireless networks Typically, the equipment that you need to deploy a wireless network includes a wireless access point and wireless adapters. However, in the simplest case, even using an access point is not required to deploy a wireless network. The fact is that there are two modes of functioning of wireless networks: Infrastructure mode and Ad Hoc mode. In Ad Hoc mode, which is also called the Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS) or Peer to Peer (point-to-point) mode, network nodes directly interact with each other without an access point. This mode requires minimal equipment: each client of the network must be equipped with only a wireless adapter. With this configuration, no network infrastructure is required. The main disadvantages of the Ad Hoc mode are the limited range of the received network and the inability to connect to an external network (for example, the Internet). For example, if both wireless clients (PCs with wireless adapters) are in the same room within the line of sight, Ad Hoc mode allows these clients to be connected to a wireless network. This can be convenient when you need to quickly download data from one PC to another (for example, you went to a friend with your laptop). But if the task is to combine computers located in different rooms and separated by a concrete wall with fittings into the local wireless network, the Ad Hoc mode will most likely not be suitable, since the transmitter power and the sensitivity of the receivers to ensure a stable connection of the wireless adapters will not be enough. In this case, a fixed access point will be required to set up the wireless network. However, the advantage of the access point is not only that it allows you to significantly expand the coverage area (range) of the wireless network. The access point in the wireless network performs a function similar to that of a traditional cable network switch, and allows all customers to be integrated into a single network. The task of the access point is to coordinate the data exchange between all clients of the wireless network and to provide all clients with equal access to the data transmission medium. The mode of operation of a wireless network based on an access point is called the Infrastructure Mode. Consider two Infrastructure modes - Basic Service Set (BSS) and Extended Service Set (ESS). In BSS mode, all nodes of the network communicate with each other only through one access point, which can also act as a bridge to the external network. In the enhanced ESS mode, there is an infrastructure of several BSS networks, and the access points themselves interact with each other, which allows to transfer traffic from one BSS to another. Access points are connected by means of either cable network segments or radio bridges.
